If a tree falls in the forest...

So...I went for a ride today before the 3 days of rain begin. I nice hilly ride. Instead of driving my car to the bottom of my road where I normally start my rides, I decided to just start right from my house.

I live on a dirt road and it's almost a mile straight downhill. The road was recently graded so there's a lot of soft dirt and rocks on it. It's a little more packed down now, so I figured I could handle the downhill and some of the uphill when I got back. When I did get back and was riding up, I got sucked into the soft dirt. It kept pulling my bike to the right hand side of the road. I tried to steer back to the center where the dirt was packed down but it just wasn't working.

Remember it's steep uphill and soft dirt so I'm going about 4 or 5 mph at this point. I knew this wasn't going to end well and went to yank one of my cleats out of its pedal so I could just stop, but it wouldn't yank and then.... over I went!  Kaboom! Thankfully it was soft dirt and not too many rocks so I didn't land too hard and it actually just made me laugh. But it got a little more ridiculous because I realized I was stuck! Because of the way I was tangled up in the bike I didn't have the right leverage to unclip from my pedals. Finally I had a bright idea and reached down and took off one of my shoes. Then I was able to stand up, still attached to the bike with the other foot, unclip that foot and hobble over to the grassy side of the road. I detached my now empty shoe from the pedal, put it back on my foot and walked the rest of the way to my house. I only suffered minor cuts on my elbow and it was just too funny to be upset about it.

Nobody witnessed it at all...and I didn't even have to tell anyone...but I just had to! ;-)

And Rich bandaged my elbow like a good nurse.

LOL !! One of those slow motion falls ?

I did bush trails/gravel roads on Sunday, and almost had the same thing happen when I hit soft sand (poor light and I hadn't stopped to change lenses so didn;t really pick it till I hit it <g> But I only have toe clips, so foot came out easy :)

BTW: gets dark real early here now. ride yesterday arvo had to use lights to see the road at quarter to six :(

Bill - yeah definitely a slow-motion fall. Those endless moments of "oh crap, how much is this going to hurt, now?"

And I think really a BAM or maybe even just a THUD rather than a KABOOM.

The picture on the heading of my blog is one I took a few springs ago when the maple were just leafing out.

Oh and btw - it's time for me to start posting pictures of my garden to torture you now. Fair play. Of course we had a frost yesterday morning!

Ah well I still had fresh zucchini, capscium and tomatoes from my garden tonight.. yum with pasta after a slow 30 km ride :)

But what I do miss is the fresh basil. don't forget to plant basil around your tomatoes...

Oh, and sing bad opera to them
