Riding in the Rolling Cafe in Stockholm

Last spring when I was at the DevSummit conference in Stockholm, I scheduled an extra day to be a tourist in this incredible city. I walked everywhere. As I walked around, I kept seeing a tram go by that had a big coffee cup on the top of it.

(Here's a photo I snagged from the official web site)

After I arrived home, I did a little web searching and figured out what it was and promised that next time I was in Stockholm I would ride it.

I went back to the conference again this month and was fortunate enough to have an extra day again. That's not by accident of course.

The Rolling Cafe is pretty special. Stockholm used to have a tram system but changed over to buses. The trams were well loved and when they were decommissioned the Swedish Tramway Society convinced the city to leave the #7 line  in tact. The society members actually run and work on this line for free just to keep it going. Here's a bit of info from the official site

Line 7 runs most of the year in central Stockholm. The members of Swedish Tramway Society Stockholm chapter keep the line running without pay, except for your appreciation!

Frequency
The old tramcars from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s run in regular service. Normally we provide service every 10-12 minutes

On weekends, the special cafe car is added to the tram.

I spent the tourist day with Brian Loesgen who was also there to present on Oslo at the conference as well as local BizTalk guru Alan Smith and his wife Emily, boating out to the Archipelago. When we returned to the mainland, Brian and I headed to the end of hte line that is downtown and waited for the next train. When it arrived I was so excited to get on, but was told that it was all done for the day. If I was 4 years old, I would have started bawling my head off right then and there because we were leaving early the next morning to fly back to the U.S. But finally she realized that what we needed to know was that the tram was heading back to the other end of the line so we could have a one way trip. Hooray!

Here is our lovely hostess (she was so sweet!) bring us our coffee as Brian and I enjoyed watching the city go by.

She was happy to take a picture of Brian and I enjoying the ride.

When we got to the other end of the line we had a nice walk back to the town center.

The Rolling Cafe was such a treat. If you are going to Stockholm (or if you live there and have never done it) I highly recommend it.

Let me make my suggestions regarding Sweden! I love Sweden, not only because its a beatiful and relaxing place (everying work so smoothly!) but also because my sister lives there!I suggest taking the train from Stockholm to Upsala and have a look at this nice little town. If you can rent a car you can drive there (45 minutes) and maybe also to Sigtuna, a beatiful traditional village between the two cities, near the Arland airport. For eating, I suggest the Buffet of Grand Hotel (you can try all shorts of reindear and salmon goodies) and Östermalms Saluhall (http://www.saluhallen.com).
