Hunter S. Thompson: “now this is a guy who should have left a note”

My dear friend and college roommate was highly impacted by Hunter S. Thompson’s work when we were in college — I believe even writing one of her two senior theses (she was a double major – my brilliant friend 🙂 ) on something that involved reading a lot of his work. She went on to do her post graduate work at Medill School of Journalism and is, of course, a journalist who I know will someday get a Pulitzer!

Of course I thought of her immediately this morning when I read that Thompson had killed himself. I thought that my friend’s reply was a nice tribute in her journalistic shorthand…

i can’t blv he did it. i always admired him and thought of him as an icon but only in last couple years  did i come to totally appreciate and read a lot of his stuff. i wanted to have a beer with him at woody creek tavern but i guess that won’t be happening…

proud highway is an awesome book i read last year…
now this is a guy who should have left a note.

Hogshead Beer of the Month club for microbrews

For Christmas, I got my hubby a 4-month membership in this great beer of the month club. I have given him this in the past. Who knows, it might have helped provoke him to propose to me! They send awesome beer from microbrews all over the u.s. that you might never have heard of. The first one arrived today. I laughed my ass off when I opened it up. It contained 6 bottles of  Wolavers beer which is made by Otter Creek brewery in Middlebury – 25 miles from our house. Wolavers is also currently Rich’s favorite – he just loves their Wit Beer which was a special release. The other beer selection  was from Michigan’s Arcadia Brewing Company. Of course it’s all a big lead up to the Vermont Brewer’s Fest this summer. I drive. Rich drinks. You can get pretty goofy on ten 3-oz samples!

Wall Calendars with Newfoundland Dogs

Almost every year, someone gives me a wall calendar of newfies. This is a calendar you can buy at any of those calendar kiosks in the malls around the country. They are made from stock photos. What is funny about the calendars though is that every year there is at least one a dog that was bred by my parents in there.

This year it is Sequoia. If you look at the last picture on this calendar’s back cover, you can see it was from the same series of shutter clicks as this picture on my parent’s website.

Still no skiing

It is sunny out with fresh snow. I promised myslef that if the temp went above 10F I would hop in the car and go over to Mad River to do a few runs after lunch. I have not skiid ONCE this year even though I bought a ski pass, even though we moved to Vermont to ski, even though we bought a house only 7 miles from MRG just so we could go there easily. It’s 9 degrees. Too cold. Keep working. Will I ever ski again?
