One very bright spot this past week was visiting with my own “nieces”, actually the daughters of my cousin, Amy and Andrea. Their older brother has a fully outfitted Toshiba M200 – docking station and all, but they have never been allowed to touch it. So they were astonished that I let them use mine for hours and hours. Of course, they were thrilled with Math Practice and loved drawing, handwriting recognition and all of the coolness of it.

This seems to happen to Scoble every time he flies also. Frank Gocinski lost his tablet to his seat mate for the entire flight from Seattle to San Francisco. Seems that the seat mate is now a TabletPC convert!

Ahh I’m kidding. I know you do. But, dude, when you yawn about tablets because all you are seeing is
…it makes me wonder if you have seen my many posts about the tablet applications that help me think out of the box – the box you have just drawn.
Applications like XThink (for grown ups), MathPractice (for kids), the Circuit App that Loren Heiny is working on. Why not peruse through the different software on TabletPCPost and check out some of the things that go beyond the box.
Not one of these is a killer app, either. There are definitely a lot of vertical market uses for a tablet. That’s the biggest chunk of the current market. The next is those who want the coolness factor. Someday tablets will be a fact of life. For now, people do need a real reason to get one.
Regarding ArtRage – someone like me has no use for that, but it’s definitely more than vertical market. The vertical market would be the graphics designers who are doing amazing things with it.

Many people think of the TabletPC as a laptop with inking capabilities, but there is so much more to it. The speech technology is really advanced and I learned a lot about what has gone into it and where it is going from some of Microsoft’s “big brains” when I was at the Tablet PC DevLab this summer. But that’s still not all. The inking and speech are part of the full stratum of what is really the mobile pc.
