Burlington’s Kathy Vavrick-OBrien is named a Surivor All-Star

No surprise here. Kathy was a goddess in every way on Survivor Marquesas. I only watched that season as interest in Kathy as a local hero heated up. Ken Jaffe, the guy who designed (and donated) our Vermont .NET logo did her really cool website. Ken’s wife, another Kathy, gave us weekly reports during Pilates class since she and Ken were going to Kathy O’s weekly Survivor parties to watch the episodes as they aired and getting the inside scoop. I just got sucked in, what can I say. I can’t believe she’s going to do this all over again. Egads!

cold snow and wind

The sub-zero temps all week have sucked all the moisture out of the snow (as well as my nostrils every time I got outdoors – don’t you hate that feeling?<g>). When you walk on the snow it squeaks and creaks. Now it has wamred up a bit – a balmy 0 degrees when I walked the dog this morning). But it’s very windy and all of that dry snow is blowing around like great big dustbowls.

Trapped in (well near) Paradise

I am not going to make excuses for playing hookey today after working day and night, seven days a week for few years trying to learn .NET. So I played hookey today. Yesterday was notably one of the best ski days ever at Mad River Glen as reported by many many locals who have skiid there for years. So we went today since it is only 7.5 miles from our house to the parking lot :-). Got right on the [famous, landmark] single chair to go up to the top and ski the absolutely magical Antelope and Lower Antelope. Just past the mid-station, the lift stopped. I was about 25 feet in the air. It was probably about 20 degrees. Two and a half hours later, I was lowered down from the chair lift. Something had broken and they had to evacuate everyone on the entire chair lift. I was the 2nd to last person off. Brrrrr. So much for a play day. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to get us all safely down.

less power to ya…

Another generator day. We had about 1.5 more feet of snow last night. I had a client call me and say “why aren’t you skiing?  GO SKIING!”. But unfortunately, I have to figure out how to print out a 300 page report for another client even though my printer doesn’t work to well on the generator and get it to FedEx before they close tonight. I may have to pick up my printer (uggh – an old LaserJet IVsi) and go somewhere else.

Keyboard Campaigning – the guy behind the Dean Meetups

This article was featured in our local groovy weekly Seven Days this past week. It’s not about the whole blog phenom around the DeanforAmerica campaign, but another aspect – the use of the meetups.com site to create Dean related gathering. It is as much a social computing phenomenon as what Dean has done with his blog. Meetups.com was hardly used before Michael Silberman got his hands on it. I wanted to point it out since Halley Suitt has been writing so much about the web side of Dean’s campaign lately. Halley doesn’t have comments so this was the best I could do…

Halley Suitt in Burlington

Halley was here…and I missed her. Damn! Well getting into Burlington wasn’t really an option over the weekend anyway with 2 1/2 feet of snow falling here. We did manage to drive 7 miles over the App Gap to get to Mad River Glen yesterday though of course. The parking lot was jam-packed so I’m sure many from Burlington made the trip. Over the mountain was interesting, to say the least.

(I have to confess that though I have her misbehaving.net blog in my aggregator, somehow her real blog wasn’t. She was blogging about Vermont starting on Thursday and I missed all of them – aaargh! Of course, that’s corrected now.)

Regarding this big storm that I have been so gleeful about, sadly there was a storm-related fatal accident north of Burlington where I used to live. A mother and her 15 year old daughter who were from Fairfax died in an accident on a road that I know well and is very hairy in bad weather. The roads were horrible and for some reason the 15 year old was driving.

Got Snow? Send it here! Pleeeeeeeeze

Hey! We moved to Vermont for a reason. We’ve got 4 lousy inches of snow right now. Already we are getting the same insult as last year. We moved here from the Hudson Valley where they are expecting 12-18 inches of snow (okay so it’s a blizzard) in the next few days. According to Sam Gentile, Boston’s buckling down to get hammered. We are VERY happy to have snow storms here. We just camp out at home for a few days and then strap on our skis or snowshoes. It makes us very happy. It is what we live for. But nooooo – everyone else who does NOT want the snow gets it. This is what happened last year. A gazillion snowstorms everywhere that is south of us. What is going on here? We WANT THE SNOW! 🙂
